Lacrosse Defense Recruiting
College coaches evaluate every position differently. Here's what actually matters if you're a defensive player building a recruiting profile, from the stats that carry weight to the film that gets watched.
What Coaches Look For at Defense
Defensive recruits are evaluated on positioning and discipline as much as physical tools. Coaches want to see consistent takeaway ability (caused turnovers), reliable ground ball play, and a clean clearing percentage that shows the ability to get the ball out of the defensive end under pressure. Full-possession film matters more here than almost any other position, since highlight clips rarely show footwork and off-ball positioning.
Stats That Matter Most
For defensive recruits, coaches weigh caused turnovers, ground balls, and clear percentage above raw totals alone. As always, the number that actually moves a coach's evaluation is the one they can trust, meaning stats verified by your travel or club coach carry far more weight than self-reported numbers on a resume.
